Due Jan 4: Watch a modern superhero movie. Take notes on what standards of heroism this movie places for our society: if this movie was the ruler upon which we measure individuals in narratives to see if they qualify as heroes, what would the markers be? Due for Tuesday: Work on your Profile Piece
Due for Thursday: Read "Bragg Quits" articles (found on our resources page). Blog post: Is what Rick Bragg did that big a deal? Does it change the way you read his work or what you think of him as a writer, reporter, or journalist? Why would or wouldn't this be acceptable in journalism as opposed to any other field? Is honesty really that important? Due for Friday: Read The American Man, Age Ten. Blog Post: Think of your stereotypical adolescent male. What does he look like? What does he like to do? What is he interested in? How does he feel about his family, siblings, girls, teachers, and friends? What is important to him? What does he wear? Due for Monday: Read the first two paragraphs of 10 Susan Orlean pieces. Make notes on what constitutes a "typical" Orlean lead. Bring these into class. Also, work on your profile! Take notes on how Odysseus might be speaking as one who is conscious of his audience. What details does he mention? Why might this be the case? Due for Monday Read 2.3 and 2.4 of The Odyssey. Make a list of actions that Odysseus that shows his "cunning". We will begin reading from Susan Orlean's The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup towards the end of the week. Please bring in a copy of the book to class on Friday, if possible. I will make copies of our first article for us!

Read through the chapter titled "Colors". Blog Post: Isolate a technique that Bragg uses when trying to solidify an angle on a subject as sensitive as race. Try that technique in a post that talks about the sensitive topic of applying to colleges: revealing where you are applying; what scores/grades/chances you have; the role of legacy, race, class; whether or not you announce when you get in and how; you guys know better than I do! |
