SIDENOTE: A lot of our reading this week is on NYT, which allows 10 free articles before they ask for a subscription. However, there's a rumor that, if you open up your browser in "private mode" or "incognito mode", it'll reset the article count! Can you give an example of a moral fact? Due for Monday: Write your op-ed or editorial on whether or not Newton South should adopt the proposal. Due for Tuesday: HNZLMN (5 pages at least!) and your editorial!
Due for Thursday: Read the following articles: 1. Is Google Making Us Stupid? (2008) 2. The Useless Agony of Going Offline. (2016) Blog Post: Pick out a sentence from each article that you think does a great job of summing up what the author is intending to convey through the article as a whole. Then write your opinion on both of these statements: which feels more true than the other? Are they equally valid? Can you reconcile both ideas? How might the technological or societal changes that occurred over the past eight years help one transition from a fear of Google dumbing us down to one where abandoning technology leads us feeling more incomplete? Due for Friday: Read The Atlantic's piece on mindfulness in the classroom: When Mindfulness Meets the Classroom (2015) and Salon's piece on "phubbing": "My iPhone is Ruining my Life." Blog Post: Find a school/ summer camp/ program that institutes mandated "unplug" time. Detail what the institution's policy is and how what you read in the articles is reflected in the experiences, rationale, or results of this initiative OR find an example of a school that has moved to one-to-one technology and consider how this institution engages with the ills of modern technology (and, if it doesn't, whether or not this is appropriate). Due for Monday: 1. Write your Op-Ed to the Newton Tab on which Principal to support. 2. Fill out the Academic Honesty Survey. Due Monday, the 29th: 1. Turn in your poetry portfolio on Turn It In and bring a printed copy to class for submission.
Due Wednesday, March 2nd: Submit the form in which you tell me what class you want to take next year. Due for Tuesday Blog post: Iron Man vs Batman! Use sound logical reasoning and logical fallacies - clearly identifying which you are using - to argue who would win in a fight.
We had a snowday on Friday and Monday! Here's the amended homework schedule: Due for Monday: Read the following statement that is rumored to be from street artist Banksy. Do you agree? Do you disagree? What sort of expectation or effect does our society's constant advertising have on our minds and philosophies? Due for Friday: Read the following piece for our debate 1. "If Values are Right: What's Left?" - Handout 2. "Brands are our Peers" - PBS 3. "There's nothing wrong with Advertising Towards Kids" - United Liberty 4. "The Case for the Private Sector in Education" - The Atlantic 5. "The Role and Impact of Public-Private Partnerships in Education: Conclusions" - The World Bank 6. Your own research! Think about what issues there might be in targeting advertisements towards schools or asking schools to be the medium through which these advertisements are delivered and if these issues are valid. Due for Tuesday, the 23rd 1. Please submit your first editorial onto Turn It In; pretend you are writing for the school paper. 2. HNZLMN via Google Drive.
