New York Times - NIL Brings Back Old Concern: Sex Sells Blog Post: Do you buy that this is a real issue / problem or something that people are just getting worked up about? How would you respond to someone who considers the growth of opportunities for conventionally attractive female athletes empowering and progressive? Do you agree with the following statement from Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer: “I guess sometimes we have this swinging pendulum, where we maybe take two steps forward, and then we take a step back. We’re fighting for all the opportunities to compete, to play, to have resources, to have facilities, to have coaches, and all the things that go with Olympic-caliber athletics...This is a step back." Due for Tuesday Read the following articles. 1. Elizabeth Hoover - Identity. 2. Insider Higher Ed - Professor Leaving University after Being Dubbed Pretendian for Years 3. The Atlantic - I'm a Black Professor. You Don't Need to Bring that Up. Blogpost: When is it appropriate to consider the identity of an academic or a professor? Does lying about your heritage matter when considering the quality of your research, scholarship, or teaching? Does it depend on the subject at all (say a physics professor vs an ethnic studies professor)? How would you respond to someone who considers the fact that lying about your ethnicity or race is disqualifying on for an academic institution to be proof of progressive ideologies gone too extreme? Can you articulate why claiming another race feels like a gross violation of society's norms and values?

Vox - West Elm Caleb and the Couch Guy Blogpost: Is it a triumph or failure of social media and current day journalism that non-criminal social offenses -- like immoral dating habits, being a "Karen", or lying about who you are -- get exposed in ultra-public ways? Is there some implicit deal for those who post things online to know that they are opening themselves up to the sort of media attention and scrutiny usually reserved for celebrities? What lines should be drawn around acceptable online behavior when targeting normal, every day people who are serial daters, poor customers, or cheaters? Blogpost: Are celebrity sex lives or their sexuality part of the “deal they signed” when they became famous? When is it appropriate or inappropriate to gossip about their romantic entanglements, failed relationships, or sexual attractions? Is speculation about relationships different than speculation about sexuality or gender identity? How should we feel about Kit Connor or other celebrities who felt as though they had to come out of the closet because of public speculation? How intimate should the public get to the personal lives of celebrities?

Do you empathize with or understand any of the students who were reprimanded at all? And, are the courts getting this right? Is liking a post the same as posting it / warranting a suspension? What should be the limits to how school administrators police social media activity of teenagers who are still developing into their full selves? Blog Post: Can a fan of the Yankees / the Dodgers (or the MLB in general) or the Browns (or of the NFL) watch, celebrate, enjoy the performance of Domingo German / Julio Urias / Deshaun Watson without celebrating his personhood / his violence? Are the cases between the two athletes substantially different enough to elicit different responses ? How would you respond to someone who claims that the these sports teams or leagues should not be concerned with his behavior as it has nothing to do with his production on the field and was not found to be criminal?
