Due for Thursday: 1. Blog post: Should endeavors like "Thug Notes" or "Thug Kitchen" be considered racially charged/ cultural appropriation? Why or why not? What standards could one develop to see if something should be considered "cultural appropriation"?
2. Fill out the following survey is that if Turn It In fires some alarms for similar writing, I know that it's because you are covering the same topics or interviewing the same people: survey link Due for Friday: Read the first 4 pages of "Thank God for the Atom Bomb". Take notes on the argument that the author is making and whether or not you agree with the overall claim. Due for Wednesday: Blog post: Revisit a major story from the past couple of years; it could be the UVA rape scandal, Donald Sterling's racist remarks, fatal use of force by police, a mass shooting, or anything you wish. Consider how it was reported and what news principles it observed: who was interviewed? What views were given the most weight or merit? What stages of journalism did it go through (from breaking the news to late night comedy show fodder, news usually follows some sort of path as the story develops. Can you trace the trajectory?)? Do you think anything could have been added, changed, or subtracted from the way our media carried the national conversation on this matter?
