Due for Thursday: 1. Make sure to bring in your first draft for peer conferences 2. Read through and make comments on another peer's paper, basing your responses/ questions on how well the author is representing different views, how the author is dealing with the questions that the writing raises, and how the author is "exploring" the topic as opposed to proving a thesis. Here are your pairs:

Flip through They Say, I Say (it's a quick read, I promise!). 2. Blog post: using one of the templates presented in They Say, I Say as a topic sentence, write out a paragraph that engages one of your sources for your summer reading essay. Then, reflect on how it might help you construct an essay that is centered around exploring an understanding as opposed arguing a thesis.

Due for Thursday: Read the first 2 chapters of our novel. For each character we meet, write down one passage or quotation that best captures this character. Due for Monday: 1. Read Chapter 3. 2. Take notes on how an individual of your choice tries to assert power in this chapter and whether he/she is successful in his/her attempt. Due for Thursday: Through Google Docs, please write up 750 words on your summer reading. This is meant to be a "braindump" where you utilize space to just get rolling: write out your ideas, what you plan to explore, the issues you want to research, what your initial understanding of the topic is and how it relates to the idea of being American.
Due for Friday: 1. Read "In the Name of Love" 2. blog post: what would the world look like if everyone just pursued what they love to do? What is preventing this from being the case? What do we gain or lose by using the language of romance with our vocations? Due for Monday: 1. Read George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language". 2. Blog post: In what ways have the changes in our language reflected the changes in our society? Are these changes for the better or for the worse? Have we lost or gained with the changes in our language? 3. Read the introduction to "They Say, I Say". Due Friday, the 25th: Submit your response to George Orwell's essay via Turn It In by 11:59 pm.
