Due for Tuesday Read Chapter 1 of Hiroshima Blog Post: What group of people are treated as "less than human" by society today? Can you find an article or a blog or an opinions piece that relates this treatment/ conceptualization?
Due for Friday 11:59 pm Turn in your Trend Story on Turn It In Due for Monday Read Chapter 2 of Hiroshima Blog Post: On pages 29-30, we follow the perspective of Mr. Tanimoto as he races into the city, unharmed. The narration puts forth that, "the wounded limped past the screams, and Mr. Tanimoto ran past them. As a Christian he was filled with compassion for those who were trapped, and as a Japanese he was overwhelmed by the shame of being unhurt, and he prayed as he ran, 'God help them and take them out of the fire.'" Revisit these pages and consider whether or not the "shame of being unhurt" has any echoes or reflections in our society and context today. Does this idea register to us as foreign or familiar? In what ways do we see this notion, if at all, in our society or our school today?

F Block Due for Monday 1. Read Books 12 and 21 2. Write a one paragraph "Counter Argument" in which you present and defeat a reasonable contention to your answer to the following question: "Is Odysseus primarily responsible for the loss of all his men by the end of Book 12?" "Wait, Mr. Lee! What happens in Book 11 and in Books 13-20?!" Okay so, in Book 11, Odysseus goes down into the underworld and meets a whole bunch of people; a series of women come up to him and ask him about the world above and if their sons are still famous and talked about. His mom tells him that his dad is dead and that there are suitors in his home eating everything and tryna get with his wife. Achilles comes by and asks if people still remember him (it's a theme!), and Elpenor is all like "yo, bro, wanna bury my body?" which helps us realize that because of how all his other men died, they didn't have a chance to honor anyone in a ritualistic manner! Also, it means that, instead of making forward progress back to Ithaca, his men have to turn around and go BACK to Aeaea. Sucks to suck! READ BOOK TWELVE BEFORE READING THE REST OF THIS Then, in Book 13, Odysseus leaves the next morning on a Phaeacian ship. Poseidon, who is still pissed at our boy O, complains to his bro, Zeus; Zeus allows Poseidon to punish the Phaeacians. The Phaeacians drop off Ody and return back to their shore; their ship turns to stone and sinks, killing everyone aboard. The Phaeacians vow to never help anyone, ever again. After a quick rendezvous with a disguised Athena, O is granted the appearance of a beggar and is led to his old shepherd, Eumaeus. Eumaeus is extremely nice to him and houses our boy O. Athena goes off and finds Telemachus, Odysseus’ son. She’s like, “Hey! Those suitors are going to win your mother’s hand soon, so you need to get home. P.S. one of those suitors has plotted to kill you so be careful. His name is Antinous, and he is a bad person.” Tele is like, “Aiiight” and goes off to find his homeboy, Eumaeus. When T goes to E’s hut, O drops his disguise, and the two embrace and cry, like real men do. Ody, using his mind, makes a surprise attack plan: he will enter the palace disguised as a beggar and then BOOM! Surprise! It’s me, Ody! Arrow in your face! Just like I did with Troy! (It's a theme.) Tele dips early the next day and sets up the stage for his pops to come through. Ody and Eu go off together and get pooped on everywhere they go: the village, the town, and the palace. Antinous goes out of his way to dis the two; he’s a bad person. Another beggar tries to box O, but our boy went Cassius Clay all over him. Penelope, Odysseus’ wifey, comes out – enhanced with some extra sparkle by Athena – and says that she will draft her choice soon; but – PSSSSHHHT – she has no intention of really doing this. She says that, although she ain’t no golddigger, any suitor who wants to be considered needs to show what’s in his wallet. The suitors go cray with the gifts, making it rain treasures and gems. This starts off a small fight amongst the suitors, but T comes through and gets everyone to chill. They go off to bed for the night; while everyone else is asleep, Tele collects everyone’s weapons and hides them away. The next day, the suitors piss off our boy O, who is still ninja-ing as a beggar, all day: they insult him, throw bones at him, and plot another assassination attempt on T. Then, Lady P gets this idea… -- Oh snap, I forgot. You guys need to know these fools, too: Melanthius – Odysseus’ goatherd who is rooting for the suitors. Eurymachus – One of the suitors who, with Antinous (he’s a bad person), are the dynamic duo that coordinate everything with the other suitors. He’s a bad person. Due for Tuesday 1.
