Due for Tuesday Read Malcolm Gladwell's "The Sports Taboo" (available on our resources page) and NYT's "Does Teacher Diversity Matter in Student Learning." Blog-post: Both articles wrestle with the dynamics that fuel representation, societal expectations, and cultural aspirations, particularly with Black Americans. While this idea might make sense on a macro scheme, would you feel satisfied if they were used to explain the fact that there are no black students in our class?
Due for Thursday EITHER: A. Read Time Magazine's "Crazy Rich Asians Is Going to Change Hollywood. It's About Time". Blog-post: Respond to the following passage: For so long, Asian-American women have been told to be grateful for whatever they get, and that being objectified is better than being ignored. But Wu’s clear ideas about the type of work she wants to do, along with her race and gender, have made her a target on and off sets. “I couldn’t do a shoot because I had a sick family member, and I was punished for it,” she says. “Even saying I’m worthy of being a leading lady—people don’t like it when a woman asserts her worth.” But her experience on Crazy Rich Asians, being supported by people with the same commitment to representation that’s guided her career, was more positive. “At the end of the day, the thing that drives people and moves people is truth and story and humanity,” she says. “If you make sure all your work has depth, even if it’s something fun and light like a rom-com, that’s how you make good work.” How important is representation for minorities in American society? What sort of comfort can be found in working in a context that is culturally homogeneous? What does it say about the status of Asian Americans if "good work" and "truth and humanity" is presented through the lens of a rom-com? Does the genre of film help or hinder Wu's racial, cultural, or gender-based goals? OR Blog-post Using a sentence stem from the "They Say, I Say" packet as a prompt for your first line, respond to Esquire's piece on X's passing. Blog Post: How do you respond to the Times’ piece that posits “In each instance, it has been less than a year since the allegations against these men surfaced, and in each instance, the men have done little in the way of public contrition. When they have apologized, they have done so with carefully worded, legally vetted statements. They have deflected responsibility. They have demonstrated that they don’t really think they’ve done anything wrong. And worse, people have asked for the #MeToo movement to provide a path to redemption for these men, as if it is the primary responsibility of the victimized to help their victimizers find redemption” ? Do you agree with their readings of the past nine months in Louis C.K.’s life? What should he, as an entertainer, try to do before he tries to return to the stage? Is it different than for a politician, a teacher, or an athlete? Can we divorce artist from art in this case? Are you ready for welcome Louis C.K. back into your life? |
