Does it matter if it's in the classroom or the football field? When, if ever, is it appropriate for an adult to share or practice their beliefs in the presence of students? Does it matter if it's passive (like a lanyard. flag, or sticker) or active (holding up signs in the parking lot)? Would you feel differently about your science teacher (or history teacher) if they had a poster of a polarizing politician on their wall? Read the following article from NYT Opinion about whether or not "Twitter is a real place" and the data from the Pew Research Center. 2. Schoology post - describe a social media controversy in a sentence or two (and provide links if possible!). Then, write a couple sentences thinking through the questions "is social media a "real place'? Is social media, internet drama worthy of news reports and having real opinions on? If something is trending on social media, does this mean automatically mean this is something that is important?"

Due for Thursday Read the following articles 1. The Guardian breaking down Andrew Tate's content 2. Andrew Tate's response 3. This piece in Salon (left leaning culture magazine) about how "far right self-help gurus" target teenagers or this piece from GQ that is similar in content. Blog post: In your opinion, do you find Andrew Tate's content more objectionable / offensive than the other content you interact with on social media? Does this feel "really real" and important to consider or more like "social media drama" without much implication in "real life"? How much blame does TikTok or Twitter have to bear when it comes to how their algorithms push Tate's content / other controversial content? Do you find it problematic that social media companies can unilaterally remove a creator from their platforms without trial or adjudication? What implications might Tate's removal have for a free society?

NYT Op-Ed on whether Styles' approach to his sexuality is something to aspire towards 2. The Week collecting several opinions on the question of queer-baiting 3. Rolling Stone's profile on Harry Styles and his own words on how he navigates the public. Blog Post: Are celebrities' sex lives and sexualities "fair game" for public consumption? Can you articulate the harm of a celebrity who is "queer-baiting"? Does it matter if it's jsut a perception and not the reality? Do you personally think Harry Styles is queerbaiting, and do you think we should care? NPR's report on a Missouri school district that is allowing spanking Blog post: What does the appropriate relationship between a community, its schools, and its politicians look like? Should a local school system reflect the beliefs and values of its community, even if those beliefs might be contentious or controversial? What if a local community's values are not in harmony with the larger state or national values? How should a national or statewide politician interface with local school boards and local school employees? How many parents or voices form a "critical mass" in regards to curriculum, resources, or employment decisions? Due for Tuesday, 09/13 - Read 2 of the following articles regarding Deshaun Watson: 1. NYT breakdown of what happened 2. NY Mag thinking through the initial suspension 3. New Yorker interviewing the NYT reporter on the Deshaun Watson story Blog post: Can a fan of the Browns (or of football) watch, celebrate, enjoy the performance of Deshaun Watson without celebrating his personhood / his sexual violence? How would you respond to someone who claims that the NFL and the Browns should not be concerned with his behavior as it has nothing to do with his production on the field and was not found to be criminal? Does this logic extend to other fields or jobs? Does the NFL have a problem with addressing the violence of its players off the field? Will you be watching football this season? |
