Random Extra Credit Opportunity!
Due to the mix-up in assignments, the Mrs. Kelly's Monster blog post will be considered extra credit! You have until the end of the term to complete this. Due for Tuesday Read "Where Alabama Inmates Fade into Old Age"( found on P. 23) and "A Thief Dines Out, Hoping Later to Eat In" (page 33) of Rick Bragg's Somebody told Me. Also, read the article titled "Graying Prisoners" (found on our resources page). Blog Post: What should we do with or for old prisoners? Due for Friday 1. Submit the Profile Proposal through our Google Drive folder. (If you have not created a Term 2 Folder yet, please do so!). Read "Where a Child on the Stoop can Strike Fear" (P. 67-74) and this Washington Post article. Blog post: On Page 72, we get this paragraph after a relation of a car-jacking: "Nicholas's mother does not believe her son is evil. She just believes he gave up." Does this sentence sum up what could be reasonably assumed is Bragg's intention when crafting this article? Could either of these articles be considered "tone - deaf", that is considered inappropriate for the matter/manner/timing of the sentiment being expressed? If so, how? Due for Monday 1. Read "Tried by Deadly Tornado, An Anchor of Faith Holds" (p. 4) and "On Walls, Memories of the Slain are Kept: (p. 8). Take notes on how Bragg develops paradoxical ideas. 2. Read an article from Icons Chapter. Referring to other articles, bring in notes on what you patterns of craft you notice. Due for Tuesday, December 8th Rough drafts of your observation pieces are due! Please submit them through Google Docs.

Due for Tuesday: 1. Blog post: On pages 29-30, we follow the perspective of Mr. Tanimoto as he races into the city, unharmed. The narration puts forth that, "the wounded limped past the screams, and Mr. Tanimoto ran past them. As a Christian he was filled with compassion for those who were trapped, and as a Japanese he was overwhelmed by the shame of being unhurt, and he prayed as he ran, 'God help them and take them out of the fire.'" Revisit these pages and consider whether or not the "shame of being unhurt" has any echoes or reflections in our society and context today. Does this idea register to us as foreign? In what ways do we see this notion, if at all, in our society today? 2. Finish Reading Chapter 3 (it's long!) Due for Friday: Please answer the following survey as honestly as you can: survey link. It does not ask you for your name! The survey is also available on our resources page. Due for Monday: Finish the rest of the book. Blog post: one common notion that we notice, time and again, is how the repeated exposure to something - even as appalling as the fallout of a nuclear strike - can quickly lose any immediate impact on an observer. Revisit a page on which we can see this happening and consider how this can be true for our lives today: what is something that, if we wrote down plainly and simply, people might find disturbing or appalling, but - due to repeated exposure - we have accepted/ become inured to it? Reminder: Both blocks will be meeting in Goodwin Computer Lab on Monday, 11/09
